The basics of Inside Linebacker Play is best considered using the ASKAR acronym.  Prior to the snap we ASKA to know the basics of our position for the front called and the coverage called.  This has to be answered prior to the play!  However, when the snap happens we have a Response that is based on our “Ability” to end the play:

Alignment- This is your place on the field based on the defensive front called.

Stance- The stance has to match the alignment.  When facing a man we are square.

Key- This is the offensive indicator you focus on to determine your response.

Assignment- This is a gap or tag that may be a blitz and coverage when it is a pass.

Respons[ibility]- This is your part, using technique to fulfill your assignment to shut down the play.  When you have a play that does not pertain to your assignment you pursue to end the play- always go to the whistle, always keep moving, and always play DOWNHILL!
